How far a hedge can be cut back
How far a hedge can be cut back depends entirely on what it is made of. Beech, hornbeam, privet, hawthorn, laurel and yew all regrow from old wood, so a neglected hedge can be taken back hard and will fill in again. Leylandii and most other conifers will not. Cut those into the brown wood behind the green and the brown is what you are left with. We identify the species before quoting, and where a conifer hedge has outgrown its space we say so rather than cutting it and hoping.
Cutting hedges that have gone above ladder height
A hedge that has gone above ladder height is a tree surgery job, not a gardening one. Our climbers work from ropes and harness, which means the top gets cut level rather than tapered off wherever the ladder happened to reach. That matters on long runs, on hedges against a road or boundary, and on commercial sites where a hedge has to be kept to a set height. Evergreen hedges over two metres can also be subject to a council complaint from a neighbour, so height is worth keeping on top of.

Rob Sheppard studied Landscaping and Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College and holds National Certificates in both. Cover runs to £10 million public liability, £10 million employer's liability and £10 million product liability, with a written risk assessment available on request for any job. Hedge work puts people at height with powered cutters, often over a pavement, a road or a neighbouring garden. The insurance and the written assessment are what stand between you and a claim if something goes wrong on your property.
