What a crown reduction actually does
A crown reduction takes the whole canopy in, evenly, so the tree keeps its shape at a smaller size. Every cut is made back to a growth point, a side branch already heading the right way, which the tree seals over and grows on from. Reductions are agreed in feet before work starts, so you know what you are getting rather than finding out afterwards. Crown thinning is the other option where light is the problem rather than size, taking density out of the canopy without changing the outline.
Pruning at the right time for the species
Timing changes what a tree can take. Most deciduous trees are best reduced in winter while dormant, when the structure is visible and the tree has the whole spring to respond. Plums, cherries and other stone fruit are pruned in summer instead, because winter cuts leave them open to silver leaf. Birch and maple bleed heavily if cut in spring. Timberwood works across the range, from fruit trees in a back garden through to big reductions on mature trees, so the timing gets matched to the species rather than the diary.

Rob Sheppard studied Landscaping and Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College and holds National Certificates in both. Cover runs to £10 million public liability, £10 million employer's liability and £10 million product liability, with a written risk assessment available on request. Bad pruning is not always obvious on the day. Topping a tree leaves stubs that rot from the cut inward and throw up weak regrowth, and the damage shows up seasons later, which is why the qualification behind the saw matters more than the price on the quote.
